Chief Executive – CEO | Food retail | Southeastern Michigan

Busch’s Fresh Food Market is a family supermarket with 15 locations serving Southeastern Michigan. It has been in business since 1975 and currently employs 1500 associates. Their focus is on their guests shopping experience and they embrace a consumer driven business model. There is a heavy emphasis on fresh foods, organics, healthy lifestyle trends, and a large assortment of everyday staples to satisfy todays consumer. Busch’s is the largest independently owned grocery service chain in Michigan. Their corporate offices are located in Ann Arbor on South Main Street just minutes from the downtown area.

The Company has been in business for 39 years and the serving President & CEO is John J. Busch, CPA, who is in his 28th year. John’s father Joe served previously in the same position. At this time, John is focused on transitioning the company from his current role to the Executive Chairman of the Board. Ownership of the company will remain with the Busch’s family, John, Tim, and Doug. John is one of the original founders and largely responsible for their current and past success.

Its single store ideal footprint is 45,000 square feet and some locations vary slightly from this model. The stores proximity are within a one hour driving distance which provides easy access to each location. The store locations include: Rochester Hills, West Bloomfield, Novi, Farmington Hills, Plymouth, Livonia, Carlton, South Lyon, Pinckney, Dexter, Ann Arbor at Plymouth and Green, Ann Arbor on Main Street, Saline, Tecumseh, and Clinton.

Busch’s primary warehouse supplier is Spartan-Nash, Inc. out of Grand Rapids. In addition, there are long standing relationships with other business partners who together work to enhance and cultivate a positive environment. Over the past four years Busch’s has remodeled 4 stores and plans to open their 16th store in March of 2015. Reinvesting into existing stores has been a key strategy in maintaining the overall viability, innovation, and profitability of each location. The overall financial performance has exceeded the industry norm and continues to position itself as an industry leader. Their long standing earnings history has translated into a very strong balance sheet, long term leases, and room to enjoy future growth.

Job summary/responsibilities:

The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board and is based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan Corporate Headquarters.

The CEO is responsible for developing the future-oriented vision and strategy for the company and leading the plan’s execution throughout the organization. This is a tremendous opportunity to create and run an innovative, experience based and profitable upscale conventional supermarket. To accomplish this, the CEO must develop, analyze, implement and drive new product, merchandising and marketing strategies to achieve maximum profitability, sales growth, associate development and shareholder value.

The CEO must bring fresh thinking and oversee all aspects of the business. He/she will understand that they are building more than just a “grocery” store but delivering a guest experience that will out-perform its competitors because of service, innovation and quality standards. To achieve this objective, the CEO must have demonstrated experience in dealing with local preferences whether they are influenced by ethnic influence/culture, general demographics such as income/age/education and the local competitive environment.

The CEO must be an agent of change with the mandate to improve the brand’s equity with its consumers, especially in new or high transient markets where the brand identity is weak relative to national competitors. The CEO has the opportunity to take this brand and business to the next level of guest experience, sales growth and profitability.

As a family held business with family values, the CEO must be able to embrace and enhance those values with both guests and associates while achieving the objectives outlined above.
Specific performance and personal competencies required:

Executive Leadership Ability: The successful candidate will have the ability to create a clear, compelling vision of where the organization should be in the short and long term. He/she will be able to articulate that vision to the full organization and the board. He/she will make decisions that balance a variety of factors and will generate innovative strategies to address current and future business needs to achieve the vision.

Innovative Consumer-Centric Orientation: The successful candidate must have a track record of growing a business through understanding of consumers using research, database mining and segmentation techniques. This person will then develop and articulate a clear understanding from the consumer’s perspective. He/she will then use this information to craft a plan that builds brand equity and consumer relativity while significantly contributing to attaining business goals. Innovative thinking is essential in determining what could be, rather than what is.

Analytical Thinking and Business Planning: The successful candidate must be able to consume large and varied amounts of data and translate into specific plans, tactics and timelines of action. He/she must have an insatiable desire to track and measure performance and adjust to meet and exceed stretch goals. This person must be able to present plans in the greater context of the company plans and be able to cascade educational objectives and performance measurements to the team. The leader must also be a great delegator of responsibility to the team and then be energized by collaborating, coaching and mentoring others on the Busch’s team toward quantitative and qualitative results.

Hands-on Management Style: By remaining tactically focused on results, the new CEO will also lead by example. This person must be decisive yet gain perspective from the board chairman. The CEO will have an energetic, collaborative and empowering management style that will work best within this family-values organization. He/she must be able to direct the team and take them to the next level, set priorities, allocate resources, take accountability and achieve results.

Minimum requirements:

MBA or equivalent, 15+ years in the food industry, Longevity in employment, Able to relocate to Ann Arbor, Michigan within 90 days

Job Summary

This position is has overall accountability for producing desired results associated with service excellence, quality clinical outcomes, market share maintenance/expansion, and financial integrity of operations at assigned medical facility or complexes, being highly visible at the facility, region and system levels, and includes the development and management of campus growth and improvement plans, efficient utilization of resources, acquisition of technology, and program development. This position is responsible for developing and fostering positive relationships with all constituents including medical staff, employees, volunteers, external agencies, and the community. This leadership position is also responsible for the development of short and long-term plans for carrying out the goals and objectives of the System as developed by the Board of Directors. This position is responsible serving as a change agent and driving, supporting and modeling a service-oriented culture focused on patient safety and the overall patient experience. This position serves as the principal link between hospital activities and the community, local Board, and medical staff.

Essential Functions

  • Promotes high performance expectations for the campus leadership/management team. Directs and ensures the effective identification, recruitment, development, and maintenance of talent for current and future organizational/facility needs in order to achieve goals and objectives. Sets clear expectations and holds team members accountable for producing desired outcomes. Motivates and develops team members and promotes teamwork.

  • Directs and oversees financial stewardship with an emphasis on providing efficient utilization of resources (maximizing operating margin), and making appropriate decisions pertinent to capital and technology acquisition (maximizing return on investment).

  • Maintains a service excellence and healing culture with high expectations established for positive patient experiences. This culture should create an environment that results in high employee retention and high employee satisfaction. This service excellence culture includes ongoing and meaningful communication with employees to ensure that all staff members are well informed and recognized appropriately. Serves as a leader in developing the Continuous Quality Improvement process, in educating staff and role modeling Service Excellence, and in assisting with cultural transformation.

  • Develops and maintains positive relations with the medical staff, the community, patients, families, regulatory agencies, contractors, and other applicable parties, ensuring and fostering a high level of collaboration within a highly matrixed team environment in order to coordinate activities, review work, exchange information, and resolve problems. Promotes collaboration between the system, hospital management, and medical staff. Serves as a liaison to the medical staff leadership and to the medical staff committees. Works with medical staff to assure the provision of facilities and services that fosters a high level of professional practice and responsiveness to the needs of the community, including high quality patient health care and desired medical management outcomes.

  • Provides leadership and actively participates in the development and implementation of strategic, tactical, program and operational planning. Utilizes forecasting and planning processes to identify capital and technology acquisitions and program development opportunities which achieve desired campus growth related to capacity and capability of services offered, ensuring the delivery of services that are responsive to the needs of the community.

  • Participates in community and industry activities in an effort to enhance community recognition of the organization and the campus, ensure proper regulatory and accreditation standards, and to obtain cooperation and support of the community on issues that impact the medical center. Positively represents the organization and the facility in the community and/or with various national, regional, and/or local entities, garnering desired support in order to enhance program development.

  • Implements, through management and leadership staff, a Patient Safety Plan that: fosters an environment that focuses on processes and outcomes rather than individual blame; ensures that safety is a priority in design and redesign of new services; allocates financial, informational, physical and human resources for improvement activities; and assures patient and family disclosure of “untoward outcomes.”

  • Maintains on-going communication with facility employees to ensure that the staff is well informed in regards to the strategic direction of the System. Conducts routine employee forums to inform and keep abreast of the issues that employees are facing and ensures that issues are addressed timely and appropriately to avoid third party intervention. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Master’s degree level of knowledge in management, preferably hospital administration, coupled with a minimum of five years increasingly responsible administrative leadership experience in a healthcare facility. Board Certified American College of Healthcare Executives Fellow (FACHE) credential required. Experience representing a hospital, medical complex, and/or medical center(s) to its community, with evidence of strengthening the hospital’s presence and impact. Proven track record of partnering with medical staff to achieve desired facility-specific and organizational outcomes. Proven experience in leading fiscally sound, profitable, efficient, and responsible healthcare operations. Strong financial and business acumen, including a keen understanding of operational and financial measures that define success, as well as budgeting and forecasting methodologies, including working knowledge of capital planning and capital investment practices. Knowledge of modern national trends in hospital quality and patient safety. Skilled in coaching and developing direct reports and/or other employees that results in enhanced performance outcomes; setting and pursuing aggressive facility priorities and goals that demonstrate a strong commitment to overall organizational success; effectively allocating resources in order to accomplish goals and objectives; quickly assessing and assimilating facility and industry financial dynamics in order to act quickly and appropriately to changing environmental factors; negotiating win-win scenarios with outside vendors/partners while representing the facility and organization in the best possible light; developing collaborative and positive relationships with medical staff, employees, volunteers, the community, and/or other applicable parties; measuring and managing work outputs. Excellent human relations, organizational and communication skills are essential.
