Taking a risk is “exposing oneself to the possibility of loss or injury in the hopes of achieving a gain or reward.”
Research indicates that women are perceived to be more risk averse. That means women are at a disadvantage when it comes to getting support for risk-taking. Risk-taking role models of both genders are important in an increasingly complex world. Because smart, well-considered risk-taking is essential to our growth, and to exponential success, strong performance and leadership, we need to view risks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than potential failures.
Growth and comfort don’t co-exist, we have to be ok with discomfort. This session will help you learn how to embrace risk and execute bold ideas.
Former Royal Air Force Fast-Jet Pilot; Author, An Officer, Not a Gentleman
CEO, Hillenbrand
All times Eastern
Mandy Hickson joined the Royal Air Force in 1994 and flew the Tornado GR4 on the front line, where she operated in hostile environments, including patrolling the ‘No Fly’ zone over Iraq. Much of her remarkable career was spent as the only female aircrew, throughout 45 missions over Iraq and three duty tours, evidencing her mental resilience, bravery and powerful attitude.
From failure to history-defining, Mandy's flying career was hugely influential, and her frontline experiences means her understanding of risk management, leadership and human factors is second to none.
Drawing on her experience of calculated risk-taking and decision-making under pressure, Mandy will share vivid lessons from the cockpit that can be applied other management and leadership contexts. She’ll offer strategies and behaviors that can be adopted when the stakes are their highest to help you overcome risk avoidance tendencies and embrace risk so you can execute bold ideas.
Kim Ryan became CEO of Hillenbrand in 2022, completing a career-long climb through the company that began in 1989. Hillenbrand is a $2.5-billion, global, diversified industrial company with more than 10,000 employees in more than 40 countries.
Her journey up the ranks required leaps of faith, a growth mindset and taking on challenging developmental assignments, forcing Kim to make calculated risks for her own career and for her company’s growth.
Over three decades, she’s navigated being a female leader in a male-dominated industry and demonstrated a knack for taking smart risks. She’ll share pragmatic examples to help you cultivate risk intelligence, adopt a growth mindset to approach risks with a positive attitude, take calculated risks and learn from your failures to improve your decision-making and risk-taking abilities.
We’ll break into small groups in Zoom meeting rooms for facilitated discussions on the key takeaways from Mandy and Kim, share challenges with one another, and help each other create an action plan that benefits from one another’s experience and lessons.
