After Nike recently announced it would start offering customers the ability to make their own sneakers using 3D technology, Under Armour is also raising the bar with manufacturing automation.
School teachers like to say their job is the most important in the world. But to the manufacturing economy, truck drivers are the ones who keep the network humming along. And right now, there are far too few drivers to go around.
At least four types of manufacturing leaders are mulling over the new labor contracts which just wrapped up between the Detroit Three automakers and the United Auto Workers. One issue they’re looking at closely is the likely cause-and-effect between the union’s huge financial gains in the new accords and the potential sacrifices it is making in job security and future membership levels.
A recent McKinsey report shows that very few occupations will be automated in their entirety in the near or medium-term. Rather, certain activities are more likely to be automated, requiring entire business processes to be transformed, and jobs performed by people to be redefined, much like the bank teller’s job was redefined with the advent of ATMs.
