Transforming Energy Storage

Longer-term, mass-scale battery storage to accompany the electric grid is a critical goal within the industry. Bud Collins, CEO of a company in the field, shares how his organization is approaching the problem.

Fully leveraging renewable energy sources to get to net zero simply won’t happen until the energy created can be stored at mass scale and used whenever necessary to accompany the electric grid.

Hudson, Massachusetts-based American Energy Storage Innovations Inc. (AESI) is one of the companies aiming to do just that, says Bud Collins, a longtime industry veteran who took the helm of the organization after a strategic spin-out from American Battery Solutions in September 2023.

Collins shares how AESI is working to tackle one of the most critical challenges of our time: ensuring reliable, flexible and sustainable energy storage to power the clean energy future.

Tell us about your efforts so far.

At AESI, we’ve embraced the challenge of transforming the energy storage landscape with purpose and precision. Since our inception, we’ve been laser-focused on designing grid-scale battery energy storage solutions that go beyond the status quo. [We argue that] our flagship product, TeraStor, is the most advanced ultra-dense, ultra-reliable energy storage system on the market today.

Traditional battery systems often leave energy stranded, underutilizing capacity because performance is held back by the inefficiencies in the system. But TeraStor changes the game with an innovative architecture that maximizes the performance of every well-designed component, unlocking more energy, amplifying efficiency and significantly boosting the return on investment for customers.

We’ve made exceptional progress in solving industry pain points, like creating systems with 98 percent true availability, faster installation times and unparalleled accuracy in the metric “state of charge,” which measures the remaining capacity available in a battery at a given time, as well as the metric “state of health,” which measures the level of degradation.

These benefits directly address our customers’ biggest concerns—profitability, performance and operational simplicity. We have an unwavering commitment to meeting customer needs, including those they know and express as well as their latent needs, which require deeper insights to uncover and solve.

Additionally, sustainability is woven into every facet of our business. From designing systems with end-of-life recyclability in mind to reducing the carbon footprint of our supply chain, we’re committed to driving meaningful environmental progress while delivering exceptional value to our customers.

How has being independent helped propel AESI’s mission?

Most importantly, we’re able to act quickly and decisively in a fast-evolving market. Our team prides itself on having a laser focus on meeting our technical and commercial targets. We have the freedom to innovate, pivot and execute strategies tailored to the unique demands of our customers.

We’ve built a culture of accountability, where every team member has a stake in delivering the best solutions. This fosters collaboration and innovation, enabling us to tackle challenges like scaling up manufacturing, optimizing software for energy management and integrating with existing energy systems without compromise.

Above all, we have the freedom to prioritize what matters most: aligning our products and services with the needs of our customers.

You’ve said AESI is positioned for massive growth. Tell us about your plans, including for your manufacturing operations.

AESI is on a trajectory to scale rapidly. We’re doubling down on R&D to maintain our technology leadership while further expanding our global manufacturing capacity. By the fourth quarter of this year, we’ll have opened our second manufacturing facility in Malaysia, designed to meet the surging demand for grid-scale storage while maintaining cost efficiency and product excellence.

This facility will complement our current operations, offering state-of-the-art production processes and further enhancing our ability to serve international markets. We’re also exploring opportunities to strengthen our regional supply chains and collaborate with partners who share our vision for sustainable growth.

Beyond manufacturing, we’re heavily invested in driving innovation across digital capabilities. Our proprietary energy management system, StorView, is transforming how energy is optimized, with AI enabling customers to maximize ROI with precision and ease. We’re exploring how such advanced capabilities can further empower customers to anticipate market shifts, improve predictive maintenance and uncover new efficiencies.

These are just a couple of examples of our broader commitment to innovation. From refining energy management to enhancing system reliability and sustainability, we’re constantly working to address the needs of our customers and stay at the forefront of the energy transition.

You have 35 years of expertise in the industry and a reputation as a forward-thinking and results-driven leader. What’s your career strategy?

Success in this industry requires more than technical knowledge—it’s about having a clear vision, anticipating market shifts and inspiring a team to push boundaries. My approach has always been rooted in three pillars: innovation, execution and collaboration.

Innovation ensures we’re always one step ahead. It’s not just about creating the next product, but about identifying and solving the challenges that will define the future. At AESI, this means investing in groundbreaking technologies that align with the energy transition.

Execution is about turning ideas into results. I’ve always prioritized operational excellence and delivering solutions that meet and exceed customer expectations.

Finally, collaboration is key. This industry thrives on partnerships, and I believe in building relationships that drive mutual success. Leading AESI has been the culmination of all these efforts, and I’m excited to continue shaping the future of energy storage with the incredible team we’ve built.
