When David Novak took the helm as CEO of Yum! Brands, he had a straightforward yet ambitious mission: to cultivate a unified and thriving organizational culture. The secret to achieving this, he believed, was studying and replicating the success of top performers.
In a recent episode of the Corporate Competitor Podcast, Novak (the 2012 Chief Executive of the Year) reflected on how he approached creating cohesion across Yum! Brands’ global operations while celebrating the individuality of each franchise. “We really felt that we should have one culture around the world and in each of our brands,” said Novak, whose company serves as parent to KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. “We felt that the brands’ differentiations should be celebrated, but how we work together, how we win together, we felt should be the same. So, what we had to do was come up with an approach that made sense for each brand.”
To achieve this, Novak and his team studied the best-performing KFC franchises, identifying what made them excel. “We studied our very best restaurant managers,” Novak said. “We studied their work environments.”
His team then took the lessons learned and created a cultural framework that could be implemented globally. “We didn’t just put them up on a wall and laminate them,” Novak explained. “We actually went out and trained people all around the world about what it meant to believe in all people, what customer focus meant, what accountability meant, what having positive energy meant, what teamwork really meant. We trained people with specific exercises where they could discover why this was so important.”
In the podcast, Novak also shared other key insights into leadership, including:
• The importance of adaptability. Growing up, Novak frequently moved to new environments, teaching him the value of learning quickly and building relationships—a skill he now applies to welcoming and supporting new team members.
• The impact of the “Taking People with You” leadership program. Novak developed this initiative to help more than 4,000 people understand leadership mindsets and create actionable business growth plans.
• Lifelong learning and mentoring. Novak stressed that even the best leaders must continue to grow and share their knowledge to foster collective success.
A cornerstone of Novak’s leadership philosophy is the belief that success multiplies when shared. He consistently challenged his team to avoid hoarding knowledge and instead, focus on creating a culture of openness and collaboration.
“What are you going to do?” Novak asked. “Are you going to be a hoarder? Are you going to keep this to yourself? Or are you going to go back and share it with everybody and let people know what you learned?”
