More than three-quarters of respondents (78.6%) to a February Chief Executive survey said that Document Management apps—such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Evernote—are the type of apps they find most useful in helping to stay on top of things and run their business. News, Weather and Other Information Content apps ranked second highest among CEOs, presidents and chairman, while Mapping and Traffic Monitoring came in third.
Locator Tools (such as Foursquare and Find My Kids), Home Automation Tools (such as Nest, SmartThings and Control) and Entertainment Apps (such as Pandora and ESPN) were least needed in terms of business management value.
Large-Company CEOs Use More Social Media
When analyzed by company size, leaders of large companies ($1B+) showed higher adoption of certain apps than their counterparts at small and midsized companies. For example, they were 50% more likely to use Social Media and 20.7% more likely to use Mapping and Traffic Monitoring tools. There was also a 9% increase in their use of Document Management apps and a 4.3% increase in their use of News and Information apps.
Leaders of small businesses were also more likely than mid-marketers to use Social Media and Mapping and Traffic Monitoring tools to help further their business. They also ranked highest for Personal Finance, Locator Tools, and Shopping Tools such as Groupon and Amazon.
However, midsized company leaders were more likely than all others to use Organizational tools such as the Google Calendar, Bump and Wunderlist, as well as Travel apps such as TripIt, Uber and Expedia.
In addition, individual respondents personally recommended Harvest—a time and expense tracker, note taker Evernote, TallyFox—collaboration software, mobile timesheet Shifter, traffic monitor Waze, the KPI scorecard, Dropbox and Uber.
