ArrowStream CEO LaVoie Improving After Shooting

“Steve is still in critical condition with some small improvements in natural reflexes,” Sue Michalowski posted on the website CaringBridge on Sunday, three days after Steven LaVoie was shot in the 17th-floor offices of ArrowStream in the Loop. “The swelling in his brain remained consistent with yesterday. He seems to be resting peacefully.”

Northwestern Memorial Hospital said LaVoie, 54, remained in critical but stable condition.

Last Thursday morning, Lavoie had scheduled a meeting with friend and colleague Tony DeFrances, who was chief technology officer for ArrowStream, the company LaVoie founded in 2000.  DeFrances, 60, had been told a week earlier that he had been demoted as part of downsizing and told LaVoie he wanted to talk about it.

Police say DeFrances pulled a gun and the two struggled before DeFrances shot LaVoie twice and then shot himself in the head. DeFrances, who did not have a firearm owner’s identification card, used a German military pistol and authorities said they were trying to determine how he got it.
