Jim McNerney, Chairman and Former CEO of Boeing, Named “2015 CEO of the Year” by Chief Executive Magazine

Greenwich, Conn., July 2, 2015/PRNewswire/ Chief Executive magazine today announced that Jim McNerney, chairman and former CEO of Boeing, has been named “2015 CEO of the Year,” an honor bestowed upon an outstanding corporate leader, nominated and selected by a group of their CEO peers. This is the 30th anniversary of the award, with past honorees including Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft, Jack Welch, former CEO of GE and Michael Dell, founder, chairman and CEO of Dell Computers. Last year’s honor went to Disney chief Bob Iger.

Nominations for CEO of the Year were garnered from among the readers of Chief Executive magazine. The 10 most frequently cited nominations were evaluated and a winner voted upon at a closed-door CEO peer Selection Committee meeting, which took place in March in New York City.

“Jim McNerney is leaving Boeing in a good place,” said J.P. Donlon, editor in chief of Chief Executive magazine. “Overall, growth and financial performance has improved, with five-year cumulative returns to shareholders significantly outpacing the broader S&P index and its Aerospace & Defense Index.”

Owing to McNerney’s efforts, Boeing provided an annual average return to shareholders over the last five years of 25.2 percent, and a compound annual growth rate over the last five years of 32.9 percent.

“I’m extremely impressed with who he is both as a CEO and as a citizen,” said Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of Disney, about Jim McNerney, and last year’s awardee. “The company he runs is large, complex and extremely important in terms of the industry. I think he’s just an outstanding choice for this award.”

With Boeing being the nation’s largest exporter, McNerney is the chairperson of President Obama’s Export Council and currently serves on the boards of P&G and IBM. On July 1, he handed the reigns of the CEO position over the Dennis Muilenberg, but remains chairman.
